Gong xi fa cai, hong bao na lai!

Happy Chinese New Year! This is the year of the dragon...a very lucky year! Tonight we celebrated with a traditional chinese dinner. We had noodles to represent a long life, dumplings to bring luck since the first banknote in China was called jiaozi (the chinese name for dumplings) and we had oranges to symbolize abundance and luck (the chinese word for tangerine sounds like luck). It is also traditional to have eight dishes to eat at dinner since the chinese word for eight is lucky....we did try our best to have eight dishes too!
There were many Chinese New Year celebrations happening around Toronto. The Royal Ontario Museum had chinese dancers, a dragon dance, and arts and crafts where Anna got to make her own dragon!

Anna's name in Chinese and the kite she made at the museum.
The Toronto Harbourfront also had a Lunar Festival where the world's first lantern aquarium was on display. The lanterns were made by Taiwan's top lantern maker and it was quite an impressive sight!
There were sharks...

 Fish floating above us...
 And of course Nemo!
Anna loved this exhibit. She kept looking around and saying "WOW!"

At the end of the exhibit the kids got to spin a wheel for a prize....Anna got a red envelope with a piece of chocolate in it. She liked that much more than she like her free dragon hat!
The title of this blog is in Mandarin and translates to:
Happy New Year! Now give me a red envelope!

More adventures in skating and...snow!

We started skating lessons and so far it has gone pretty well. The most important things we've learned is to keep it fun and to promise a special treat at the end of class...for Anna this means chocolate!

Anna's favorite part of skating class yesterday was putting together the puzzle...
Anna has also started standing on the ice!

Our new way of travelling to the rink and playground...we go by sled!
The playground is still fun even when covered in snow....
See you later! Time to head back home...

Skate and Snow

Last weekend we decided it was time to do what the locals do - ice skate! A couple of blocks from our house is a tennis court that the city floods in the winter and turns into an ice skating rink. So we grabbed our skates and took Anna for her first ice skating lesson! Good practice before her skating class tomorrow...
Safety first! A proper helmet is mandatory!
We went first thing in the morning and had the rink to ourselves....
The first thing Anna said was slippy! Her feet were a bit unsure but she had Daddy holding her the entire time.

We got our first significant snow today! Not a lot of snow but enough to make me unsure of driving Anna to music class and enough that I had to shovel off our porch, front steps and our driveway!
Anna loves the snow! All morning she kept asking to go outside and when we did go outside she kept yelling, "It's snowing!"
We tried to make snowballs and sometimes just sat in the snow....
We marched and ran through the snow....
And when Anna fell she realized it's also nice to just lay in the snow
Tomorrow might be the perfect day to use our new sled!

Toddlers and Tiaras

Every year at Comrie the village celebrates the new year with a big party known as the Flambeaux.  But before the adults celebrate, the kids of the village are treated to a fancy dress contest followed by a fireworks show.  This year we decided Anna would enter the chidren's fancy dress contest!
Introducing the Comrie Christmas Fairy!!!

Posing for the judges...

The pipes were played as we waited for the results.....

And the winner is........ Anna!
She won third place in the individual costume contest!
Anna won 4 pounds (about 6 dollars!) and a yummy green apple. She enyoyed the apple more than the money.... might be time to get a piggy bank!
